It’s stripping back the layers to uncover centuries of history

It’s feeling proud of the part you play. And it's the satisfaction of caring for an irreplaceable furniture collection. This is what makes working for the Royal Household so different.

The collection of furniture spanning across our locations is truly diverse, with many unique and historically significant items. What’s more, it’s a working collection; many of the items are in regular use.

Joining a team of talented conservation and restoration specialists, you'll provide practical support in a wide-range of conservation and restoration activities.

You’ll focus on upholstery and soft furnishing projects, while also supporting projects in the furniture and gilding areas, carrying out a range of conservation treatments to keep the collection in top, working condition.

Based at our workshop, and also working across sites with items in situ, you'll help survey and evaluate the condition of items, working with colleagues to propose and prioritise restorations.

You’ll develop and refine your technique for varied remedial conservation treatments, using the best methods and materials to restore and conserve the collection.

Working alongside the busy operations of working royal residencies will be a unique challenge. Yet in all that you do, you’ll aim for a perfect finish.

And knowing that you’re preserving a collection not only to be used, but appreciated by future generations - that will continue to inspire you.

With some previous conservation-restoration experience, you’ll be an all-rounder in the workshop, eager to support our specialists on a breadth of projects. You’ll have specific experience working with upholstery projects. And beyond this, you have a strong desire to develop a career in conservation.

You’ll have a keen eye for detail, which will be vital when you’re surveying and evaluating items to identify best treatments.

What’s more, your meticulous approach means you always achieve the highest standard of finish.

With good time management skills, you’ll be able to prioritise multiple projects with varied, and often conflicting deadlines.

And looking further afield, your flexible approach means you're comfortable balancing and reacting to the varied needs of a busy organisation.

With good communication skills, you'll enjoy working within a small, supportive team, and will be confident liaising with a broad spectrum of colleagues and specialists in their fields.
